We had a good turn out for Sunday’s meeting and workday. Thanks to all of you who were there and those who emailed! We covered a lot of ground during the meeting (summarized below). During the work session members finished putting together the benches and weeded the communal gardens on the East side. On the West side others (enthusiastically) uprooted and cut up a dead bush, spread dirt left by Law and Order, uprighted plants beaten down by the rain and wind in the communal bed, and weeded the lawn. A good day’s work!
The next meeting and workday is Sat., October 18.

DECISIONS AND PLANS:
· Theft. Rather than install surveillance cameras (as one member suggested), we will put up a sign in each garden saying: “Do not pick anything! This garden is under surveillance.”
· Moving the stage: We decided to form a subcommittee to investigate what would be required and different possibilities, as well as the pros and cons, to present to garden members on/around our November meeting. *** Volunteers for the committee needed—esp. people with experience in garden design or staging and those with a special interest in this decision. Alan Tenney will be the organizer. Please send RSVP to me (Ann): Siswi@aol.com.
· Dirt. The West garden needs soil badly. Decision on whether to purchase or to collect ourselves, from the Central Park supply, postponed until we have prices. (Ariel is researching this.)
· Electricity. Instead of purchasing a generator for use in construction, etc., we will contact The Bridge about paying them for using their outlet.
· Fall celebration. There was some confusion on the calendar. We will hold one festival on Sun. October 26, possibly combining a flea market, Halloween party, and music. (Details up to Events Committee.)
· Garden expenditures. For purchases up to $200, members should get permission in advance from the Steering Committee. Expenditures over $200 require the membership to vote.
Our next meeting/workday is coming up on Sunday the 7th at 11 AM. Committee heads will report on progress. If you cannot be there, please let Ann know (Siswi@aol.com) and we’ll give you an individual assignment. Thanks.
Green Thumb is sponsoring a training day on the basics of composting.
For our garden to receive compost and/or soil deliveries, at least one gardener from the garden needs to attend one of the composting clinics. It would be great if someone could attend this, so we could get a delivery before the frost!

Directions to the Garden
The 11 BC Community Garden is located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan at 626 East 11th Street, between Avenues B and C.
By Subway and Buses
The closest subway stop is the First Avenue station of the L train at East 14th Street. From there just walk across 14th to Avenue B, take a right down Avenue B to 11th Street, and walk left on East 11th. The M9 bus line runs on Avenue B with stops at 10th and 12th Streets. The M14C bus runs on Avenue C and stops at 11th Street.

Below is the current schedule of upcoming garden events. Our five-concert Summer Jazz Series opens with former Elvin Jones bassist Gene Perla taking the stage on August 16. The following week we feature the incomparable Frank Wess on tenor saxophone and flute. We hope to see you there. All events are free and the schedule is subject to change. Check for updates. (Vic Juris’s current tour was extended; the accomplished guitarist Jack Wilkins will sub for Joe Cohn on August 30.)

Dear Gardeners,
Two alerts for this week. “Law and Order” will be shooting in the west garden on Thursday, Sept. 4, from 8 AM to 1 PM. If you plan to do any harvesting this week, you might want to go before then. We’ve been quite specific about what they cannot do (e.g., tamper with individuals’ beds) and at least one garden member will be present the whole time. But if you spot any damage after the shoot, please let me know– before Monday the 8th and at Siswi@aol.com (not the garden address).
