Garden Monitor Instructions

As part of agreement with GreenThumb, we are required to keep the garden open for 20 hours per week from April 1st to October 31st. Our posted Open Garden hours are:

  • Saturdays 10:00a-4:00p
  • Sundays 10:00a-4:00p

In order to staff these hours, they have been divided into two shifts:

10:00a-1:00p (AM)  and  1:00p-4:00p (PM)

In order to staff these time slots, we require members to staff TWO shifts per SEASON. As a Monitor, you are an ambassador of our garden! We ask that you follow these Best Practices.

Prior to your shift:

  • Sign up on the Monitoring Calendar in the East Garden Gazebo.
  • (Please take note of them, as some of them may be months away)!

Can’t make your shift?

Please make sure to get a replacement and let the Monitor Coordinator know!

Make sure the open garden sign is out and visible!

On the day of your shift:

  • Show up and be on time!
  • Sign your initials on the Monitoring Calendar to say you were there.
  • You can Monitor on either the East or West Side – your choice!
  • Put the Open Garden sign outside the gate, visible up and down the block.
  • Be visible! Be seen and be aware of folks passing by.
  • Introduce yourself and invite folks in.
  • Answer any questions they may have (garden history, names of plants, events.)
    • Don’t know the answer? You can ask for contact info + get back to them.
  • Encourage visitors to join! Send them to the Website.
  • During your shift, do what you like… it’s your time in the garden!

When your shift is over:

  • Make sure all tools are away, lock the shed and be the last person to leave.
  • Bring in the Open Garden sign and make sure the gate is LOCKED!
