How to Volunteer or Donate—Help NYC Recover from Hurricane Sandy
Dear Friend:As our City begins to recover from Hurricane Sandy, I wanted to share information about relief groups and other charitable organizations to which you can donate, if it’s difficult for you to personally offer supplies and shelter to people in need.VOLUNTEERING IN NEW YORK CITY
There are numerous ways to help here in the city, and a good place to start is by registering as a volunteer with NYCService’s Facebook page. The organization has asked people to contact NYC Service with their names, email contacts, and boroughs. You can also register to be a New York Cares volunteer and be part of their disaster response team.
The Food Bank for New York is also accepting donations and possibly volunteers. Check its websites for more information.
CONTACT THE RED CROSS
All of your donations to the Red Cross will provide shelter and other support to people who have been directly affected by the Hurricane.
To donate, visit www.redcross.org, call 800-Red-Cross or text the word “Redcross” to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Currently blood supplies are low in areas hit by the storm, and the Red Cross is asking people to schedule appointments to donate blood in the New York/New Jersey area. To donate, call 800-933-2566 or visit www.nybloodcenter.org.
FOOD, MEDICINE AND SHELTER
There are scores of mobile feeding units and shelters up and down the East Coast operated by the Salvation Army, and they are serving thousands of people. You can also make a donation.
Feeding America is distributing water, food and supplies to thousands of people in the storm’s disaster zones. To donate, visitwww.feedingamerica.org or call 800-910-5524 .
AmeriCares is delivering medicine and other supplies to people affected by the storm. To donate, visit www.americares.org.
Personal hygiene items and food kits are being provided to thousands by World Vision. To donate, visit www.worldvision.org.
Other charities and relief groups offering food, medicine and other assistance include Catholic Charities USA, Direct Relief International, and Operation Blessing International.
REACHING OUT TO CHILDREN IN NEED
Save the Children provides emergency aid to families and addresses the special needs of their children. You can visitwww.savethechildren.org to donate. World Vision and Samaritan’s Purse are also providing emergency relief and seeking volunteers for children.
HELPING ANIMALS CAUGHT IN THE STORM
If you’re interested in helping animals find safe haven and good care after the hurricane, the Humane Society of the United Statesand the American Humane Association have teams working on the problem and they need your help. Donations are especially needed to help rescue stranded pets and aid animals currently in shelters.
CLEANING UP AFTER THE HURRICANE
Team Rubicon ( 310-338-1149 ) has dispatched teams to begin cleanup work and Samaritan’s Purse is also seeking volunteers to help our City rebuild.
BEYOND U.S. BORDERS
Remember that Hurricane Sandy devastated the Caribbean and claimed many lives before it hit the United States. Operation USAand the International Medical Corps are aiding those affected by Sandy in Haiti and Cuba. Operation USA is also providing aid to the East Coast.
FEMA AND THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
Finally, FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency offers a range of programs delivering aid to those affected directly by the hurricane. Check out the FEMA website for information and ways to help.
TELETHONS TO HELP RECOVERY
This evening NBC will broadcast a telethon to benefit those impacted by Sandy, starring Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Joel and other performers. On Monday, ABC will observe “A Day of Giving” on several shows to generate donations. Check both stations for more details.
BEFORE YOU MAKE A DONATION
If you are planning to give to a nonprofit in the wake of any disaster, you should first verify that it is legitimate. Charity evaluators likeGuidestar and Charity Navigator as well as FEMA can help you determine whether the organization to which you’re donating has a good track record, and that funds will go where you intend.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Donations will not result in preferential treatment by City officials.
Sincerely,
Scott M. Stringer,
Manhattan Borough President

Hi gardeners,
We need wood chips to line the paths between beds in the West Garden. We can get these free from Central Park if we pick them up ourselves. With 2 cars and drivers, a stack of garbage bags, and a few more volunteers we can do this in a relatively short time. We know a number of you have cars, but always have trouble getting drivers to volunteer. Please make this the exception! We’ll work with the day and time that is best for you. Anytime before the April 9 workday.
Thanks so much.
Ann Levine

—– If you would like to contact GreenThumb please visit: NYC will be recycling Christmas trees next Sat. and Sun. at 3 nearby locations in the Park. They have chipping machines on site. You can dispose of your tree without just throwing it out and take away as many bags of chips as you can carry! It’s too good an opportunity to miss. Robin has done this for the Garden in the past but isn’t available this year. Will you step in? We need at least one car and driver plus helpers. Schedule: Saturday & Sunday, Jan 8 & 9 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. Central Park* Central Park* Central Park* Please help out! For more information and to rsvp contact Ann {Please note corrected date!} The Make Music New York Event is coming up on Sat., June 21th! In order for it to be a success in our garden, we need volunteers for the following positions: Music coordinator: Someone to interview and book musicians for the day – 6 groups have contacted the garden expressing interest. Activities coordinator: Someone to bring other activities to the garden (ie. contact Vita Wallace). June 21 Volunteer coordinator: Lou Ludyny has agreed to be the contact person for the day of June 20th, but he will need atleast 5 gardeners assisting him with set-up, clean-up, etc. Please let me know if you would like to take on any of these responsibilities. THANK YOU! Paula These Area Events will surely interest some. Last year the Garden hosted a ‘Make Music NY’ event with Member David Wilke teaching the guitar to children. Also several of our Garden youngsters are Dance students. **** MAKE MUSIC NEW YORK on SATURDAY, JUNE 21 Last year, on the summer solstice, Make Music New York organized one of the biggest musical events in the city’s history: 560 free outdoor concerts in an array of genres and locations. Thousands of musicians — from Metropolitan Opera artists to underground MC’s, Tuvan throat singers to high school bands — entertained New Yorkers on sidewalks, streets, parks, gardens, and even cemeteries in the five boroughs. On Saturday, June 21, 2008, Make Music New York is back — and it’s going to be even bigger! For the second annual event, Time Out New York magazine has launched a website to match musicians with locations. Now anyone can find a space for their music… or music for their space. Participating locations on June 21st are invited to: — Choose musicians from our database, or invite their own to perform. — Provide electricity for an outdoor performance (for example, running an extension cord out to the sidewalk that day) — Put up a free, customizable poster in the window during June, promoting the concert. The Make Music New York organizers will then: — Secure and send you all necessary permits — Coordinate your concert with others in the neighborhood — Promote your establishment as a concert location in all programs, on timeoutnewyork.com, and in an 8-page amNewYork newspaper supplement running on June 20th. There is no charge to take part — everything is completely free. All concert arrangements must be finalized by May 1st. To get started, go to www.timeoutnewyork.com/makemusic. In a parallel section of the site, restaurants, bars, shops, gardens, block associations, management companies and others can sign up to make their outdoor space available for musicians on June 21. Each will list its location, a description of the space, the availability of electricity, ways in which they will promote the concert and what type of music they prefer. The website will then show possible matches based on each participant’s choices, with contact info (through the site or offline). Once a venue and a performing act have made a match, information is routed to *Make Music New York*’s organizers, who confirm concert details and secure the necessary permits. Not long after the site is launched, a map showing existing concert locations will be added, making available (and unavailable) sites visible at a glance. The new site will allow *MMNY* to grow even bigger, giving participants more freedom to create the concerts they want to have. *Make Music New York*’s own website serves as a source of information. Visit www.makemusicny.org. Aaron Friedman, President, Make Music New York makemusicny@gmail.com. I hope that locations in the 6th Council District will sign up! **** YOUNG CHOREOGRAPHERS INITIATIVE-Competition for The 2008 Susan Braun Award.
